As a responsible member of the outdoor community I feel compelled to brag about what a great place that we are fortunate to live in. The hardworking cycling community has done it again in promoting our resources that we value so highly and love to share. The month of October 2011 was Bike Magazine here in Transylvania county! The highly respected Bike Magazine "The Bible of Bike Tests" was compiled and complete and just hit news stands nationally. Click here to read it.

Adopt-a-Crag at Table Rock

We had a great crew come together Saturday for the Adopt-a-Crag at Table Rock State Park in South Carolina. It was great to see so many climbers, many of whom had never visited this crag, come together to steward our area climbing treasures.

If you have heard it is a long hike into Table Rock, you heard right. Anyone headed climbing at Table Rock should be prepared for a full-value day, and should prepare & pack accordingly. Despite its proximity to Brevard and Greenville, Table Rock is a rugged and gorgeous place! Be sure to acquaint yourself with seasonal closures before heading to this area, and bring some Carolina trad skills in order to tackle this pristine granite!

A big thank you to The Access Fund and the Carolina Climbers Coalition for making this event a success! See you at the crag....

Fall Flurry

Brrr! Some of the higher elevations got a dash of snow last weekend in western North Carolina. The picture at right was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway about two weeks after the one at the top of the blog, so you can see the significant changes in the fall color.

Yet, the conditions are still excellent for sticky climbing, brisk hiking and general mountain adventures. The north side of Looking Glass is crisp and quite chilly, with a narrowing window of sunshine. So, we are entering a good time of year to check out sunny NC climbing crags like the Sun Wall, Whitesides, Laurel Knob and Rumbling Bald.

Don't forget to pack fall staples for your outdoor excursions like beanies, gloves and a wicking layer such as the Montbell Combustion Fleece. All in stock at LGO!

It is Leaf Season in Western North Carolina

WNC has had an incredible fall so far, and the leaves continue to dazzle. A drive up 276 from Brevard will drop your jaw with swirling leaves and dashes of ochre, pumpkin and tomato- colored trees. As you get higher up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the colors are still incredible, but the higher elevations appear to have already peaked, and are currently mostly rusts, oranges and earthy browns.

It has been very breezy in perennial hotspots like Black Balsam, so pack an extra layer if you are headed to some of Pisgah's most loved balds to view this year's leaf season. Now is the time to head to the mountains and drink up the color. Enjoy!

Cedar Rock Climbing

Cooler temps in western North Carolina make it the perfect time to head to Cedar Rock. This crag gets far less traffic than Looking Glass, yet offers stellar climbing. We headed there Sunday and drank up the perfect conditions- t-shirts while climbing, yet very sticky.

Montbell Thermawrap Jackets are in!

Every year we get a little giddy when our fall shipment from Montbell arrives. Their synthetic and down jackets are a staple for any self-respecting gear junkie and outdoor lover. Grab one for the crisp fall nights we have been enjoying or at least add one to your Christmas list.

Here is a review of the Thermawrap Jacket from our friend Steve who just came through town with said jacket in tow:

The saying goes, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”.

What can I say, my ThermaWrap jacket is my favorite piece of clothing. The first time I used it was on a snowy day bouldering at LRC for the final leg of Triple Crown, and all I had under the jacket was a thin t-shirt. Everyone else had their monster down jackets … which they had to take off to climb, only to run shivering back to a cold jacket. Not with the ThermaWrap! Put it on … leave it on.

I’ve had the ThermaWrap for three years now with no issues. No holes, tears or loose seems … and I wear it a lot. The fit is slim and comfortable, not bulky, but still keeps your warm. The cut allows for free range of movement and the bottom doesn’t rise up much at all. It packs down to the size of a softball and it weighs so little, you can barely tell you have it on. I wash it once or twice a year and it always comes out looking great and doesn’t lose any loft. It’s not a rain jacket, but by adding a water proofing agent, you will be surprised how much rain and snow it can repel.

Last year I moved to Northern MN and thought it best to get one of those monster jackets for the -30 temps. Since I loved the ThremaWrap, I stuck with Montbell and got a shiny new Permafrost jacket. The first time I wore it was shoveling snow in 10 degree weather. I just about had a heat stroke in it. I finally discovered that the ThermaWrap was all I needed down to zero degrees, providing I was doing something active and not just sitting in the snow.

This is a top notch jacket and perfect for any kind of outdoor activity. I highly recommend it.

Btw, I wore the Permafrost snowmobiling when it was -33. What’s the wind chill for -33 at 70 mph? Its -78 … and I was toasty.

Snakes in Pisgah

If you climb regularly across the southeast, you are probably pretty familiar with the fact that snakes and crags often go together. This is definitely true at Looking Glass, so it is a good idea to keep an eye out for two very poisonous snakes that are found in Pisgah National Forest.

One is the Copperhead. We have run into this cleverly-camouflaged snake countless times, not only in Pisgah but also places like Little River Canyon and the New River Gorge. Copperheads are easy to miss when walking in the woods and our dogs have been blissfully ignorant during several near misses with large, unhappy snakes. They tend to like rocky outcroppings, meaning that the base of many cliffs is a perfect spot for a Copperhead to hang out, as well as near streams, creeks and waterfalls. We have also seen them several times at Bridalveil Falls in Dupont State Forest- admiring the view and cooling off just like us?! If you or your dog get bit by a Copperhead, get treatment right away. The bite is typically very painful, but not lethal if treated.

Yesterday while hiking to Twin Falls, we saw our first Timber Rattlesnake and boy was it big! It had at least 10 rattles, although it was fairly still when we saw it. This beautiful snake was making its way along the forest when our Weimaraner found it and was terribly curious to check it out. Unfortunately her instinct upon finding a large snake is not fear or precaution. Again, this is a very dangerous snake and if bit, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Despite these snake encounters, we have not experienced a bite and we certainly continue to enjoy the forest as much as possible. But, we do tread lightly in areas where these snakes are likely to reside, and it is a good idea to keep them in mind in regards to dogs and children when hiking, camping, and climbing. Many snakes hunt nocturnally, but hang out in the sun or cool, shady spots depending on the weather.

Safe Rappelling

Upon returning to the ground safely from a single pitch rappel, I have often been asked why I bothered to tie a knot in both ends of the rope when the climb was clearly shorter than half the length of the rope. Well, this past weekend has given me a sad reminder of why this "overkill" practice is well worth my time and energy. Climbing accidents can quickly become tragic, but many of them can be prevented by thorough safety practices on even the most mundane aspects of the sport like cleaning an anchor and rappelling.

I always like to tie a knot in the end of the rope that the climber is not tied into, or when rappelling, both ends of the rope. It gives me great confidence to know that by doing this all the time, I am highly unlikely to forget to do it when it becomes critical. I have friends who are knowledgeable climbers, but who have been lowered off the end of a rope and who have rappelled off the end of the rope, luckily without long term consequences.

Usually, "Closing the System" is a critical step when rappelling off of a multi pitch route, particularly when the route requires multiple rappels and exceeds the length of half your climbing rope. But, it is also important when nobody on the ground is present or aware to ensure that both ends of your rope are on the ground. While middle markers are handy, some ropes are not as long as advertised, the owner may have cut off a small portion of the rope due to wear or the middle of the rope can shift in the anchor.

Tying knots in the end of the rope is also a great safety mechanism when you are rappelling on two ropes at a time and they differ significantly in diameter. We often find that the difference in diameter can mean that one rope shifts a little while rappelling, making the ends a bit uneven.

For sure, you must remember to untie one of the knots on the rope end before pulling your rope, but at that point, you should be safely anchored into your next rap station or safely on the ground. As with all climbing, good communication with your partner is essential and can help double and triple check the safety of your systems.

Before you rappel, cover these basic safety checks. If you are unclear about how to safely rappel, don't be afraid to ask knowledgeable climbers for a verbal or visual safety check or reminder lesson. Also, this is a great skill to learn from a qualified climbing guide.

Basic Rappelling Safety Notes:

Ask yourself if rappelling is necessary. Many of today's anchors are perfectly suitable for lowering upon cleaning.
Catch your breath and take your time setting up your rappel. Double check your system.
Tie a knot in both ends of your rope BEFORE beginning your rappel.
Visually confirm both ends of your rope are on the ground or when possible, confirm with another climber that both ends have reached your destination.
When possible, have another climber back up your rappel with a Fireman's Belay.
Test that your belay device is functioning properly to rappel BEFORE detaching yourself from the anchor.
Keep an eye on the rope below you as you rappel to look for the rope ends. Do not assume your partner is doing the same.
Learn how to back up your rappel with a prussik or by wrapping the rope around your thigh should you need to go hands free during the rappel.

My Brevard Backyard

With both Pisgah National Forest and Dupont State Forest in our backyard, it is no wonder we are proud of it. Saturday I saw a new side of my backyard, and did an open house tour of Gaia Herbs. You could easily never realize this Organic Herb Farm and manufacturer is here in Brevard, but you will be glad once you discover it.

The fertile, 250 acre farm includes portions of Catheys Creek and the French Broad River, and is a virtual sanctuary of potent herbs like Echinacea, California Poppies, Hawthorn Trees and Ginkgo Trees. The farm and facility adhere to strict organic guidelines and certifications, and much of the plantings and pruning are done by hand.

It was fascinating to hear tidbits of the complex science behind why herbs work on specific functions of the body, and the tour certainly fueled my interest in natural, herbal preventions and treatments. Check out Gaia products locally at Poppies and keep an eye out for next year's Open House. It is a treat!

Pisgah National Forest Hiking

Saturday was as good a day as any to head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and explore a new trail. I parked at the popular Looking Glass Overlook and headed across the road and right along the Mountains to Sea Trail, heading left when it intersected with Bridges Camp Gap. This trail eventually hits Big East Fork, where I headed right/ downstream of the East Fork of the Pigeon River.

The water was running enough to offer the dogs plenty of water and a few spots worth taking a dip. Plenty of shade added to intermittent thunder and a bit of rain kept the day relatively cool. Don't let the full parking lot deter you, most people head left at the start of the trail and head to a popular swimming hole.

I turned around after about an hour and a half, which was just in time to catch some real rain, but the trail is a lot of fun and quite uncrowded compared to nearby Graveyard Fields.

Dupont Swimming

It is feeling like summer around Brevard-- the mountain laurels and rhododendron are blooming and the temperatures are getting pretty warm. As summer sets in, we find ourselves grabbing our swimsuits and headed for the first swimming hole we can think of nearby.

Dupont State Forest has several great places to swim or at least cool off. Many of the larger waterfalls like Triple Falls and Hooker Falls have pools at the bottom that are conducive to a quick dunk. Fawn Lake, accessed by the Reasonover parking area is a popular destination thanks to a short hike, a roomy dock and picnic area. Lake Julia is a gorgeous spot for a picnic and a swim, although it requires a longer hike or bike ride to access via Conservation Road or the Reasonover Creek Trail. Bridal Veil Falls also is a fun place to cool down. Keep an eye out for Copperheads sunning themselves among the rocks and be sure to leave each area as pristine as you found it.

30% Chance of Rain

Sooner or later, I am going to remember that this time of year, 30% chance of rain is basically an everyday occurrence. The last few weekends, the sight of the rain cloud icon in the weekend forecast has sent me fleeing climbing plans and doing things like hiking and gardening. While these activities are perfect for this time of year, at the end of the weekend, I am slightly kicking myself as I realize the area rock is perfectly dry.

Still, the conditions have been fabulous lately for hiking in Pisgah National Forest. The cloud cover and cooler temps have made for crisp mornings and cool evenings. Just when you think the clouds will block your views, you hit a vista with ethereal, passing clouds and are thankful for this exact forecast creating this exact view.

Saturday I grabbed the dogs and headed to the Big East Fork Parking Area off of 276 and headed out the Shining Creek Trail. This trail follows a creek nearly the entire way up to the Art Loeb, making it a truly tranquil setting and loads of fun for the dogs. The trail was especially uncrowded and quiet. Depending on which map you believe, the trail is roughly 3.5 miles to the Art Loeb, where you can easily turn around or try to make a loop with Old Butt Knob Trail. I had hoped to do the loop, but found no clear sign of the OBK trail, so I returned the way I came.

I was a little surprised that these two trails did not have blazes or signage, since they are accessed by such a nice parking area. It is easy to follow Shining Creek, but I never saw any sign of Old Butt Knob Trail in the two places I should have intersected it. Also, if you are looking to find Shining Creek from the Art Loeb, good luck! This area of the Art Loeb is not well marked, and there are numerous dead ends that merely lead to camping spots and blueberry bushes. From the Art Loeb, Shining Creek is easy to miss, although there are a couple of wood steps leading into what looks like a narrow path and soon becomes a well traveled path.

Still, I really enjoyed the massive trees, the raging creeks and the seemingly bashful burgundy Trillium. Check this trail out if you want to go beyond the BRP!

Climbing Anchor Clinic

The first time I went multi pitch climbing, I was in Rocky Mountain National Park and my climbing experience was less than minuscule. My two climbing partners bickered throughout the morning about everything from our failed "alpine start" to the direction of our route. Nonetheless, as I clung, scraped and slid in fright to the top of the first pitch, I was 100% terrified to see that my reward was a tiny ledge with a great deal of exposure to the valley below. I knew I was tied in to some sort of "anchor," but somehow this gave me no solace. Much bickering later, the two "experts" decided we were off route and that they should lower me to the ground while they attempted to find the remainder of our climb.

I mostly accredit the fear I felt that day to general climbing ignorance. I had no concept of how gear worked and what is a good anchor. Whether you are a sport climber who always thinks "I would trad climb if only I knew how..." or a trad "follower" who climbs multi pitch occasionally in blissful ignorance, assuming that your partner's anchors are bomber, you have everything to gain by learning how to build a suitable anchor. A good base understanding of anchors is the perfect way to start your trad climbing education and could give you the ability to get out of an unforeseen sticky situation.

Step 1: Find Suitable Instruction for learning to build anchors!
Lucky for you, Appalachian Mountain Institute has several Climbing Anchor Clinics on their calendar throughout NC, so the tools to learn are at your fingertips. Don't let yourself get to the third pitch of a climb only to find that your partner has established a hanging belay from an undercamed alien and assume that you are in good hands!!

Step 2: Ensure you have the proper gear for building anchors before putting your knowledge to use.

Bomber Approach Shoes - The Scarpa Quest

Scarpa has maintained a legacy of fine Italian craftmanship since the late 30's, and it shows in every finely made piece of footwear they produce. Their approach shoes are no exception. While other approach shoes either feign stickiness only to let you down at the first minor scramble, and others grip nicely for the first few months, then swiftly fall apart, the Scarpa Quest manages to walk the fine line between durability and stickiness in a high quality package.

Our first encounter with the Quest was actually in the shape of a return. A customer returned a pair claiming that the sole was faulty. To even a retail novice, this pair of shoes had been sliced on the sole by some out of the ordinary machine or knife-like feature- hardly what anyone would consider a manufacturer's defect. In Customer Service-speak, I would call this CLEAR user error. We dutifully took the shoes back, yet couldn't bring ourselves to toss them as they were quite new and the returnee had already repaired the problem with a dash of glue. So, we gave them to a fellow climber who has been happily wearing them without fail for about 3 years now!!

So, take a good hard look at the sad tennis shoes you've been fooling yourself to think are suitable for approaching climbs in, and consider taking a step to the other side. Or, if you are already an approach shoe convert, consider stepping your feet into a pair of Scarpa Quests . One, two, three, maybe more years later, they'll still be worth the money and sticking to whatever you put in their path....

Western North Carolina is well known for its multi-pitch trad climbing, thanks to looming granite cliffs like Looking Glass, Laurel Knob and Whitesides residing in our backyard. Many area visitors are surprised to learn that Laurel Knob is in fact the tallest cliff on the East Coast.

So what key gear do you bring for these classic, multi pitch climbs? Well, a bullet pack is a great place to start. These small packs are more rugged and versatile than their small demeanor might initially give away. You can stuff them into your crag pack for the approach, and pack them up as you rack up for your climb. As Katie & Adam can attest, a lot of multi pitch climbs take longer than you would have imagined, making it hugely helpful to pack a few bars, some water, sunscreen, a layer and perhaps a topo for your route.

The Black Diamond Bbee
This pack is one of the gold standards of the bullet pack category. It is nimble enough to easily hand off to your partner as you swing leads, and the hip belt is placed high enough to not interfere with your harness, yet let you sip on a Platypus or grab a Gu at the belay station. We are consistently amazed by what we can stuff in this little pack. This pack also works well as a day pack or trailrunning pack if you want to be like Jeremy & Natasha and do the Art Loeb in under 12 hours.

Metolius Zodiac
This bag is truly a mini pig- the little cousin of a traditional haul bag. If nasty weather and hauling a touch of gear is in your future, this could be the pack for you. With exterior daisy chains and haul loops, the 15 liter Zodiac is beefy, yet efficient for hauling. If you need a touch more space, try the Zodiac's 24 Liter cousin, the Metolius Mescalito. I've got my eye on one of these for when summer's afternoon showers can literally put a damper on your gear...

Sun Wall Climbing

Somehow we haven't yet gotten bored of doing a quick sesh at the Sun Wall on Le Pump and Out to Lunch. When you are short on time, this little circuit is a great way to drink in some amazing scenery and get your pump on. You can see that the trees have really turned green in Pisgah finally. Sunday was delightfully breezy and pretty humidity-free, making the Sun Wall a great choice for the afternoon.

A Little Southeastern tour de Sandstone

Easter weekend had quite a variety of forecasts, which we checked several times a day earlier in the week before deciding our chances were best to stay south. Yet again, we changed our plans thinking it would rain and the clouds did not let loose on Thursday. Nonetheless, we had a lazy morning and headed to Atlanta to see Phil's folks and check out the phenomenon known as Stone Summit.

If you haven't already heard of this climbing wonderland/ biggest gym in the southeast, it is well worth a trip. But, ask Phil about whether or not it is a good place to stop at the BEGINNING of a climbing weekend! It is hard to resist thoroughly trashing your forearms on the plethora of steepness, especially coming from the land of slab climbing.

Friday we again planned on rain, which never really happened. Still, we headed to Little River Canyon with what cryptic directions we could find. This little corner of Alabama is bigger and more beautiful than anticipated, and the steep sport climbing will keep those forearms crying. The area was absolutely covered in poison ivy and we saw a copperhead as big as my forearms, but still had a blast before heading north to Tennessee since there is no camping at LRC and the crag is pretty dog-unfriendly.

Foster Falls is a great place to cure the itch for clipping bolts, but this time of year, watch out- because that itch might also be a tick parachuting onto your head. They were a formidable army, but the camping is still very nice at Fosters and the park is extremely well maintained. More fun climbing and more copious amounts of poison ivy greeted us Saturday.

By Sunday, which was of course predicted to be the best weather day, we were back in Atlanta for Easter festivities, stuffing our faces and trying to look clean. The weekend was a great cure for our (sometimes rare) sport climbing itch, and a reminder that the southeast has so many climbing treasures!

Weekend NC Climbing Escapades

This past weekend turned from a fire and brimstone sort of forecast into quite a good climbing weekend. With Friday night and Saturday morning predicted for loads of wind, storms and rain, we basically wrote off climbing for the day and enjoyed a rare, lazy morning. We used our lack of power as an excuse to head to downtown Brevard and munch on delicious pastries at Bracken Mountain Bakery.
Strangely, by noon, the sun was coming out and we started debating what rock might dry quickly despite the torrential rains Transylvania County experienced through the night. As riverbanks and sod fields continued to swell, we grabbed our crash pads and headed to Rumbling Bald, again proving to ourselves that RB season is not yet over. At the ripe hour of nearly two o'clock, the parking lot was nearly empty.

We had a quick chat with Chimney Rock State Park Superintendent Adrienne Wallace- who is quite friendly and worth getting to know- we headed to the West Side boulders. The winds really seemed to keep humidity at bay, and the poison ivy doesn't seem to have infested the area yet, so we had quite a blast with our unexpected bouldering sesh.

Sunday Phil manned the shop before heading to the Sun Wall to dash up a few Looking Glass classics, and I headed to Boone to check out some of the climbing off of 221. It really opens your eyes to head to this area with a friend who has some real Boone knowledge, because there are a slew of climbing and bouldering destinations- much more than the usual haunts of Ship Rock and Grandmother- if you know where to go. As the temps rise, you can count on us to do more exploring in Boone's highcountry.

Little Wilson Creek was absolutely raging with an impressive amount of water, and I halfway expected either a kayaker to dash by or a member of our large pack of dogs to get whisked away. Neither happened, but we did climb some super fun, pumpy routes before heading back to Brevard, where many areas continue to hold enormous amounts of water.

What a beautiful weekend after all! Hope you got out and had fun!

Summer Preview

This past weekend felt like a preview of summer with warm temps, lazy breezes and a dunk at Sliding Rock. A crew from Charlotte came to town and we had a great time climbing at the Nose Area, the Sun Wall, and the South End. The crags were surprisingly uncrowded and sunscreen was in high demand. The Charlotte folks braved the frigid waters of Sliding Rock to finish the weekend with the perfect après climb activity (that plus a stop at LGO to stock up!) Sunday night Phil and Jon made some headway on their bouldering project. Let's hope they crush it soon so they will share it with the rest of us!

April NC Climbing

After a few wet weekends, NC climbers welcomed in April with a weekend of stellar climbing weather. Saturday we found ourselves headed to Rumbling Bald. Since it is usually too hot for RB by early April, we were rewarded by a fairly empty parking lot and had many climbs to ourselves. The trees are really blooming throughout Lake Lure and we even saw some white mountain laurel blossoms. Hickory Nut Gorge is a good week or two ahead of Brevard with spring.

We mostly stuck with the area classics, heading up Zydego, Finishing School Blues, Southern Boys Don't Wear Plaid, Screamweaver, Pumping in Rhythm, and Fine Line before heading to Papa's and Beer to gorge on salsa and such.

Sunday was another gorgeous day, and we did an afternoon bouldering session at the North Side of Looking Glass. A couple of aid climbers looked to be having fun on the Glass Menagerie and the trillium is sprouting up all over the forest.

The big news for us this weekend is that 475B in Pisgah National Forest is finally open! Hooray for easy access to Looking Glass climbing again! The word seemed to be out Saturday, as all three parking areas were packed with climbers drinking in the warm weather. A few sprinkles did not thwart us at the North Side, where Phil started sussing out the ultra thin, Waste Not Want Not. It turns out a #00 C3 is not the ideal crux piece!

I was particularly excited to see multiple female trad leaders giving a go at Invisible Airwaves. We need more hard-charging trad chicas around here.

Friday and Saturday night, Banff did not disappoint and the films were a treat to the packed audiences. The Swiss Machine and The Asgard Project represented climbing well, both motivating and frightening! Both are available at LGO if you want to check out the full length films and fuel your spring climbing motivation.

We also have a fresh selection of Sanuks and an unbelievable 3.2 oz Summit Series shell from The North Face. Everybody can make room for an emergency shell like that in their pack!

WNC Climbing

After last weekend's torrential rains, this past weekend's forecast was a real treat. We had traveled to Tennessee a couple weekends in a row, so we were looking forward to not filling up the gas tanks as much and climbing locally in NC. Although 475b was still closed (for no apparent reason,) we hoofed it up to the Sun Wall of Looking Glass. Surprisingly, the hike from the beginning of 475b (near the Fish Hatchery,) to the South End Parking Area was only about 1.25 miles. So, it really isn't as far as you think.

Still, we arrived at The Sun Wall to discover loads of running water submerging the routes. We defaulted to the South End and did Rats Ass and Windwalker- both fun classics for a sunny, breezy day. There were a few crews of SPI courses and some recreational climbers enjoying the day, and the sunny/ breezy combo made for great conditions.

Saturday night we camped out in the VW van in Tryon. We have decided to sell the beloved "Clydeabus," so we are relishing a few more trips camping in his cavernous & comfy space. We are forever spoiled by not sleeping in a tent. Sunday morning, Vinca flushed out about half a dozen deer before breakfast, and we headed to Rumbling Bald. With the forecast likely to hit 70, we dumped on sunscreen and figured we would give RB one more day before the season disappears and the poison ivy takes charge.

The Cereal Wall had its usual traffic, and we headed to Captain Crunch to enjoy stellar crack climbing in the shade. It is shocking that this route doesn't get more traffic! We then headed to Cold Fingers and quickly discovered that the name is for good reason. This is an awfully tough route in the sun as temps hit 70. Still, it was a great day to be climbing in North Carolina. Hope you had fun too.

T Wall Climbing Fun

When a beloved Charlotte friend told us her new Swiss Mountain Guide friend was coming to town and they were heading to T Wall, we didn't think twice about marking our calendars and heading to Chattanooga this past weekend. The forecast looked pretty good, and we were in the mood for a weekend full of rad crack climbs.
Frost took a gamble and drove with us in the Clydeabus, which is always a bit of a gamble. Clyde doesn't get anywhere quickly, but he sure is comfy and roomy for the whole crew. Saturday was a gorgeous sunny day in the 60's, and the T Wall parking lot was jam-packed. We were only mildly outnumbered by French Canadians, but still managed to get on classics like In Pursuit of Excellence, Super Slide, The Sweep, Fly with the Falcon and Digital Macabre. We stumbled down to the parking lot tired, but satisfied, and scarfed down Bertrand's chili, followed by some freshly delivered Swiss chocolates- oui oui!
Sunday, we were all sore, but scrumped up the trail as the humidity became heavy as can be. It was a strange weather day threatening to rain and being simultaneously muggy and chilly. Despite the un-ideal friction, we had another stellar day of climbing on goodies like Cake Walk and Blood on the Rocks. Bertrand, aka the Swiss Stallion, stole the show by sending Mrs. Socrates and Olympic Alchemy 2nd go. Apparently living within an hour of Chamonix and guiding for Les Guides de Verbier makes you pretty darn strong!
The routes at T Wall are so much fun, and so humbling. We all had our fair share of triumphs and defeats, but had a blast nonetheless. We even got to wear flip flops again in February.

February at the Obed

Since it is time to snap out of our winter/ holiday/ ice climbing stupor, we headed to the Obed the weekend before last to try to jumpstart our fitness for spring rockclimbing. Thanks to its steepness and close proximity to Brevard, this is a great place for us to climb when the winter and spring weather is temperamental. Yet, we headed to the Obed with forecasts in the 50's- unusually nice for one of our trips to the Obed.

We met up with a friend, Parker Kempf and haphazardly added another in the Clear Creek parking area before heading to South Clear. Our new friend casually warmed up on Solstice while we did the tried and true warm ups around the corner, before having fun on Pale Face, Alchemy and some of Rage. Phil did a great job sending The Shining in the Steven King Library, while Scott, a freshman from UTK sent Boo Ya in The Outer Circle.

Sunday held more mild temperatures but overcast conditions, and we headed to Lilly Bluff to do fun routes like Ticks are for Kids, Poison Ivy and Evil Weed. Being an NC trad climber, Phil insisted on grabbing the rack from the car so he could trad climb a bolted crack, which was amusing and made the folks back home proud. It is a really fun route for sure! We headed home sore and hoping to have put a dent in getting climbing fit.

February NC Bouldering

When the CCC decided to have their quarterly meeting at Crowders State Park, we decided to pack up the crash pad and head to the Dixon School boulders Saturday afternoon. Although the temps were in the low 50's, the day was cold and breezy in the shade, making for great friction. This area has some truly quality boulder problems, and we had a blast checking out a lot of the classics. Ask Donovan Craig for details on this area, as he has excellent details on the boulder problems. Hopefully Zachary will post a few pics on the CCC website that he snapped in between crushing. The CCC crew is hard at work trying to maximize our climbing opportunities in the Carolinas- particularly Ghost Town & Sauratown- so if you aren't already a member, it is high time you joined!!

Sunday we broke a Hoffmann record and went bouldering for the second day in a row. This time, we headed to Rumbling Bald's East Side boulders. This area has plenty to do and tends to be fairly uncrowded. Our crew had a blast on classics like The Carolinian and Slave Driver. Cole walked everything and the famous Tippy performed her world famous doggy yoga peeing handstand! The day was considerably warmer, which meant we started in puffy jackets and ended in flops.

Phil and I came home sore, but pumped for spring climbing adventures, and debating braking down and buying a second crashpad for our household. Enjoy Valentine's Day and see you out climbing this weekend. The NC forecast looks great!

February Already!

It has been a while since we posted, so sorry for the gap. January was a blur of trade shows across the country for Jess and Phil made the most of it with frequent B-Movie Guys nights at the Jones' house and trying to stay fit at the Brevard Rock Gym!

Our favorite news is that we got to escape for a vacation in Costa Rica. There is nothing better than getting away mid-winter and lounging away in a tropical paradise! We spent our time hiking around volcanoes, spotting monkeys, sampling mud baths and hot springs, learning to surf with a French girl named Julie, and drooling over sweet turbo diesel Hyundai vans that you can't find in the states.

I think we need a bit more time in CR to say we can surf, but I felt pretty good when Julie pushed me into the waves, effectively combating my lazy paddling skills. At her recommendation, we went to Avellanas one afternoon. Indeed, this is an awesome beach and Lola's is worth spending an afternoon at, but the surf and winds were less than ideal for our abilities that day. Can you say "le Sandbag?"

A big thank you to the Walkers who took care of our sweet pooches and tolerated our random emails and Facebook messages to check on them.

Anyways, our tans are rapidly disintegrating thanks to a lack of waterproof sunscreen and we are already drooling over spring climbing destinations. Come on in the shop and we will get you off the couch and ready for spring adventures.

Across the southeast, the biggest news has been snow, snow, snow and unusually cold weather. We finally broke down on Saturday and decided to dust off our snowboards and head to Cataloochee Ski Area.

After living in the Jackson Hole area during one of the decade's best winters for powder, it took us a while to adjust our standards and prepare ourselves for East Coast conditions. Well, we picked the right day to snowboard in North Carolina! Cataloochee received several inches the night before we arrived, and a foot of snow fell while we boarded. We were definitely pleasantly surprised!

If you head out to check out the "Looch," be sure to review their directions on their website. Our "smartphone" tried to take us down a road that is scarcely passable in winter. We arrived close to 9:00 and found road crews busy trying to prepare the road for weekend traffic. The Maggie Valley area had tons more snow than Brevard and Asheville. Thank goodness for our trusty Subaru and for the two Jeeps in front of us not slowing down too much on the last few miles to the resort!

The road was very much covered in snow and not 2wd friendly! Yet, by early afternoon, the traffic and plowing had brought the road to excellent conditions in all but the actual parking lot.

Vinca and Daisy hung out in the car while we boarded so as not to spend too long of a day at home, and had a blast playing in the snowdrifts when we took a break from the slopes.

Sunday we spent a half day climbing on 215, which by now, ought to be much fatter thanks to the recent cold days and nights. Check Phil's ice climbing conditions blog for more info.

New Year Rest Day

After three days of ice climbing, bouldering and rock climbing, my body is ready for a rest day. So, for once, I am not dispairing at the rainy forecast. Wednesday we headed to Linville to check out some ice climbs. I am quite a gumbie ice climber, but I am liking it more than I thought I would. I may have to break down and get a little gear so I can stop pestering friends to borrow ice climbing equipment.

Thursday we ran into a great crew for bouldering at Rumbling Bald. The parking lot there continues to surprise me- it has hit capacity every time I have climbed at RB this season. Still, the boulders were dry despite recent snow storms and the friction was very good. The temps hovered in the forties with significant cloud coverage, meaning we kept wearing puffies and sipping hot chocolate in between gos.

Friday we returned to RB, (see above parking comments X 2) and did classics like Comatose and Test Pilots. The good thing about the explosion of popularity in bouldering at Rumbling Bald is that the rope climbs are generally uncrowded and peaceful. Still, the ranger was about at the end of the day and I w ould guess that about 20 cars got tickets for parking on the right side of the parking lot/ road.

Winter Trail Running in Pisgah

Many of the trails in Pisgah National Forest still have snow and ice on them, but they are worth trekking nonetheless. The ethereal beauty of the forest in winter is maximized by the strange ice formations, white patches, long range views and amplified silence.

I headed up to the top of John's Rock recently and enjoyed the trails very nearly to myself. The more shaded areas of the trail are still a bit icy, crusty and sometimes slippery. But, with some sturdy footwear and careful stepping, you can certainly still get in a good hike or trailrun.

The views of Looking Glass from the top of Johns Rock are always worth the the uphill climb, although you definitely have to be doubly careful at the top thanks to patchy ice. It is pretty windy up there at times, so the dogs and I didn't stay long before continuing our loop over near Cat Gap and back to the Fish Hatchery.

If you are headed into Pisgah, be sure to pack layers and wear shoes built for the terrain. The temperatures on our run vacillated a good bit as we ran our loop. Gore-tex is your friend this time of year, so a GTX Mountain Masochist by Montrail is perfect for trailrunning, while the Scarpa Kailash will keep you supported and dry on the hike.

Hiking Panthertown Valley

Although the towns of Cashiers and Highlands, NC can get pretty quiet in the winter, Panthertown Valley is still a wonderful place to hike this time of year. Grab some hot drinks at Bucks Coffee in Cashiers and head out for a fun day in Panthertown. As you head into the main parking area, you will pass beautiful Christmas tree farms and jaw-dropping views of Laurel Knob and assorted rock outcroppings.

Saturday I made a loop by hiking:
Panthertown Valley Trail>Deep Gap Trail>Great Wall Trail> Big Green Trail>Mac's Gap>Granny Burrell Falls>Great Wall>Deep Gap>Panthertown Valley

It sounds more complicated than it really was, and the loop can be done in 2.5-3 hours. This loop walks near the base of the Big Green climbing area, but does not cross near the summit. The Granny Burrell Falls Trail was particularly fun, with lots of icy patches mixed in with the falls. With the leaves down, this loop gives you several views of area rock faces.

It is a good idea to wear bright clothing and keep your dog in check, as we did pass a hunter as he towed a buck to his truck. Still, the area is quite breathtaking. Enjoy!

Rumbling Bald Bouldering

Last Saturday's cool temps and mediocre forecast sent us packing crash pads and heading to Rumbling Bald. You usually find us climbing on ropes one way or another, but when the days are short and/ or particularly cold, we often dust off our lonely crash pad. We headed to the Cereal Boulders and had a good time until the rain forecast for 3:00 set in just after noon.

We headed out for another Hoffmann rarity- a Saturday afternoon spent watching football. Still, we were pretty surprised to see the Rumbling Bald parking lot completely full. My worries that a rain cloud had set in only on our area where squelched as we backed out of our spot and saw a stream of climbers and boulderers heading to their cars in our rear view mirror. This Rumbling Bald season promises to be busy rain or shine!

December on the Parkway

Brrr! December in western North Carolina is off to a chilly start. Nevertheless, my friend Jenna and I headed up 215 to do a little exploring yesterday. Indeed, the Blue Ridge Parkway is currently closed south of 276. So, we accessed the Mountains to Sea Trail from 215. As we parked the car, the thermometer read about 24 degrees. Still, the sun was out, the dogs were eager, and off we went.

The big question right now is whether or not there is snow on The Parkway. We saw no snow on the road at all, but much of the higher elevations are dusted with an ethereal white covering. The pine trees on ridgelines are totally white and the trails look covered in sugar. It snowed gently while we hiked on icy, crusty paths, but it looked more like glitter than big, puffy flakes. The trails are not at all deep, but the ice is sometimes deceptive, making it a good time to pull out true hiking boots or treking poles for added support.

We also took a peak at the ice forming on 215, and it looks like mid week could yield some great ice climbing conditions. Hopefully, the wind will go away. By the time we got back to the car via Flat Laurel Creek Trail, the car thermometer read 16 degrees. If you are headed up on The Parkway, remember that it can be a good 15-20 degrees cooler than in Brevard and Asheville. Plus, the winds can make it seem a good bit colder and the sun quickly ducks behind ridgelines on these short days. So be sure to pack ample layers, water and snacks. Enjoy!

The Breakfast of Champions Rack

You may look up at this Cereal Buttress route and think you have finally found what you are looking for: a 5.10 sport route in North Carolina. But, take a good look, because a little gear on this fun face climb could mean the difference in a laughable whip and a painful hike out.

The route begins at Frosted Flake, a Rumbling Bald classic, but ventures up and right instead of following the hand crack. You will be rewarded by fun, crimpy face holds, and that NC rarity- shiny bolts. But, buyer beware, as clipping the second bolt is often considered the crux. If you blow this move and have only clipped the first bolt, you will swing nastily into a leg-gnawing, jagged crack/ flake.

To make this fun route safer, practice your double rope skills and bring a few pieces of gear. By plugging the left rope into some gear up and left on Frosted Flake, you will ensure that a whip before clipping the second bolt will provide you with a clean fall.

Early Winter Trailrunning

The temps have been all over the place in the last few weeks, but there is no question that Brevard foliage is now on the ground. Still, as I have headed out trailrunning, I have been reminded how much the views change on many of my favorite trails once the leaves drop. Ridgeline trails like Mine Mountain, North Slope and Coontree Gap now offer great views of multiple ridgelines that were previously obscured by summer's lushness.

As the cooler weather sets in, we have some great trail running and hiking pieces like softshell gloves, fleece pants, wool socks and lightweight jackets that will keep you comfortable in Pisgah National Forest and Dupont State Forest over the next few months. Last Bits of Fall

While Brevard and Pisgah Forest are looking very wintry in the last couple of weeks, Chimney Rock Gorge is still showing the last bits of fall's splendor. We have headed out to Rumbling Bald the last two Saturdays and enjoyed fantastic weather. Last Saturday, a crew of Brevard locals headed to RB after a leisurely morning and an obligatory stop at the gear shop. By the time we arrived at the relatively new parking lot, the ranger let us know we were the lucky recipients of the last parking spot!

This past Saturday, CCC president Anthony Love set his alarm early and headed to RB to offer climbers a shuttle to and from the Lake Lure visitor center. This was immensely appreciated by new and old Rumbling Bald climbers, as no doubt, far fewer cars were turned away due to lack of parking. Many thanks to Anthony and crew for offering this service! Hopefully we will all become diligent at carpooling when we head to this incredible winter climbing destination!

Last week, I climbed with the Eilands on a quest for quantity in the Screamweaver area. We were pretty shocked to see next to no climbers as we headed up Zydygo, Finishing School Blues and its irritating cousin on the left, Black Planet, Static Klingon, Boldfingers and Screamweaver. There is no lack of quality in these routes!

This past Saturday, Phil and I made it out a bit earlier and started at the popular Cereal Buttress. We headed up both pitches of Fruit Loops so Phil could snap some shots of Tom Caldwell on Shreaded Wheat (see below.) It's possible my fingers are the perfect size for this crack, so it is always a blast for me to climb. After hopping on Breakfast of Champions, we headed back to the Screamweaver area, where the roped climbs are less crowded, although the war cries of boulderers continually waft through.

I had to settle something with Static Klingon and give more of a try at Boldfingers. It could be a while before I want to lead that one, but it sure is classic! We headed out as the sun set and the parking lot quickly emptied. Head to Chimney Rock Gorge soon if you want to catch a little more of leaf season. It will be gone quickly!

Halloween Sandstone

We headed to the RRG this past weekend again for a bit of a Halloween extravaganza. Jess was in the area for work with Mountain Khakis, which left Phil and the dogs convincing the Joneses to join us. This meant 3 people and 4 dogs packed up and did the 5+ hour slog to Slade in less than ideal conditions. Let's just say that by the end of the weekend, we unanimously decided it was time to change Vinca's diet and purchase a rocket box before our next joint trip.

Still, two days of sandstone climbing in perfect weather made it worthwhile. A dash of Lycra and some stellar wigs made certain climbs quite memorable. Jess briefly dressed up as a Kittler, before reducing her costume to just "Kitty," since Phil had a hard time looking at the mustache/ cat ears combo.

Phil did a great job of onsighting Rebar (in his Huber costume) and redpointing The Return of Chris Snyder. Jon casually sent Smoothie Nut, while Carly continued moving up the ranks by leading Sunny the Boxer next to Lucky Duck Soup. Jess also sent the R.o.C.S. and onsighted Riptide Ride. Fun times, although most of the locals probably hated us this weekend thanks to our high ratio of climbers to dogs. We did try hard to be respectful of the area, having heard assorted stories of recent climbers not doing so.

It is clear that The Red has become a truly international destination, since every area we have climbed at recently has had multiple parties from other countries. Now that it is getting chilly, we are likely to hunker down and stay close to home. It is the perfect season for NC climbing now- so come on down!

Southeastern Sandstone Climbing

Rest Day a la Kaymoor Mine

After 3 days at the Red and one day climbing near the Meadow, our forearms were pretty well annihilated. So, despite the ridiculously nice weather, we took a day off from climbing. What is there to do in Fayetteville when resting your forearms? Well, plenty.

We had a wonderfully lazy morning, complete with coffee o'plenty and a little lounging by Laurel Creek, then headed to check out the Kaymoor Mine. I had never been, and the contrast between the ruins of a now defunct mine, built in 1899, and the natural splendor of the gorge in fall was striking. It is one thing to hear about coal mines, yet another thing altogether different to visit a closed mine, and envision the lives, blood, sweat, and natural resources that were once spent around the corner from many of our favorite climbs.

A visit to the mine is also a good way to get a quick cardio burn by scaling the several hundred stairs on your way out. Afterwards, we scarfed down delicacies at the Secret Sandwich Society and made the imperative cruise through Waterstone. Hopefully tomorrow we will be back to sending!

A Little FA Taste

Since we got to the NRG in time to climb on my birthday, our friend Jay gave me a special birthday present. He took us to a bit of a secret crag off the Meadow River and let me have at a climb he had been eying. He dutifully bolted the route, scrubbed off moss and dirt and marked some of the key holds while Phil and I warmed up on other climbs, then allowed me the First Ascent. What a friend! After Phil, Jay and I (finally) sent it, we dubbed it a 5.11a and called it Final Bender, in honor of the crag name. It is super fun and heads up an arete before turning steep for a juggy pumpy finish. Have fun on it, if you can find it!

Red River Climbing

We picked it right when we decided to head to the Red last weekend. The temperatures were fantastic and the leaves were spectacular. We don't make it to the RRG that often, but this was the perfect weekend to head to Kentucky. Despite hosting Roctoberfest the weekend before, Slade was still hopping the next weekend, as evidenced by Miguel's parking lot overflowing up and down the road. Saturday we headed to Funk Rock City with an old friend and 2 new friends, and were thrilled to be the only party at the crag. Yet, this soon changed. Perhaps the RRG crowd had a late Friday night, because climbers arrived in throngs as lunch time arrived.

Despite the crowds, we had a blast on Funk Rock classics like Headstone Surfer, There Goes the Neighborhood and Go Easy Billy Clyde! Sunday we headed to Long Wall and saw very few parties. Routes in the sun were a bit warm, but we still had a blast on Autumn, Rock Wars and Game Boy. We'll have to come back on a cooler day and check out the stellar looking B3, as it was mighty warm when we took a look at it.

By Monday, our forearms were rapidly powering down. So, we headed to the Zoo for a short day, where we never saw another climber. We finished with Phil doing a great job on Hippocrite and called the RRG portion of our trip a wrap.

We camped off of Tunnel Ridge Road, where there is excellent primitive camping, but a permit is required. The campers next to us were fined $75 late one evening for failure to observe the fire ban. So, if you head to the RRG, spring the $5 for a camping pass and obey any current fire restrictions! The dry weather has made for an incredible string of excellent climbing weather, yet the fire danger is currently very high.

On the homefront, Marcus has been doing an excellent shop of manning the shop. Pop in and say hello and admire the new super sweet goodies from Mammut!

Leaf Season on the Parkway

Cooler temps and ample rain in late September should mean Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway will soon be ablaze with amazing fall foliage. We get a lot of questions as to when the leaf season will peak, but at this point, it is too soon to tell. Since the southeast had unusually hot weather in early to mid September, it is unlikely that the leaves will peak early. However, early October has brought lows in the 30's to western North Carolina, meaning leaf season could be short and sweet.

Look for mid to late October to be the perfect time for a cruise on the Blue Ridge Parkway or a few days of camping on the Art Loeb. A few leaves have begun changing in areas like Black Balsam as the end of the blueberry crop vanishes and fall flowers bloom. Enjoy!

Southeast Climbing in Fall

It continues to be fabulous climbing weather just about everywhere in the southeast, so climbers and boulderers alike seem to be all smiles. The weather is in that perfect part of the season where you can comfortably climb at any of the Looking Glass areas. Phil and I are considering doing a bit of an "Assault on Looking Glass" and climbing 1 full length route on the South End, the Sun Wall, the North End, Hidden Wall and maybe Cedar (?) in one day? I will keep you posted when and if that happens.

In the meantime, we spent Saturday at Rock Town since we were in Atlanta for a few nights. We have been feeling like we need some steep bouldering to boost our power and Rock Town certainly fit the bill. Sunday afternoon we dispatched Le Pump at the Sun Wall finally, so the "winter" tick list has already shrunk. I hope the party of 3 or 4 that we saw on Tits and Beer made it down safely, as they were still on the crux pitch as the sun was setting(!)

This week's temps are delightfully lower than last week, and everybody seems a little slap happy that it feels like fall. Between drooling over the new down jackets and counting down the days until I head to the New River Gorge for a week of sandstone climbing, it feels hard to get much work done. Still, there is much to accomplish on Looking Glass. I have a few goodies on my tic list for cooler weather- so we shall see how it goes....

2nd Pitch of Cornflake Crack- I've never been on the second pitch, but I look at it wistfully every time I pass it. Who doesn't??
Le Pump - I feel like a champ on this route... on toprope. The mix of slopers, balancy moves, and small holds seems to suit me. It is time to give it a go on lead.
Hyperbola- I took a nice whip on this and haven't gotten back on it. Move over copperheads...
The Odyssey- Cold weather prevented us from doing the crux pitch of this route several seasons ago, yet Phil and I think of it whenever we see the duct tape hiding the puncture on his down sweater from the offwidth on the 2nd pitch.

Looking Glass Adopt-a-Crag

A big thank you to all who contributed time, sweat, money and products to make Saturday's Adopt-a-Crag a big success! We had wonderful weather and a great crew who came together to support The Access Fund, The Carolina Climbers Coalition and the Southeastern Climbers Coalition.

Groups worked on trail access to The Nose Area, the South End, the North End and Hidden Wall. The pesky log that has been on The North End trail for some months has been dispatched and The Hidden Wall is no longer so "hidden." This climbing area was clearly heavily hit by last winter and appeared to have seen little traffic recently. After we finished our trail work, we enjoyed the fruits of our labor, and climbers hopped on Hidden Wall classics Carbo Man and Hidden Agenda.

The Silent Auction to benefit the CCC was a big success due to generous support from Misty Mountain, LaSportiva, Black Diamond and Mountain Khakis in conjunction with Looking Glass Outfitters and Fox Mountain Guides. Lucky bidders ended up with a rope, a crash pad, climbing shoes, awesome pants and goodies thanks to these brands and the CCC collected some well-deserved funds to continue paying off the Rumbling Bald Boulders.

NC Highcountry Climbing

As fall begins to arrive throughout the NC mountains, it is perfect weather to get a few more days of climbing in at Ship Rock before colder weather makes this crag too blustery. Phil and I squeezed in a tasting at Highland Brewery Friday complete with live bluegrass before heading up to camp near Linville. The evening temperatures are nice enough right now to pull out your fleece and even enjoy a campfire again.

Saturday the weather was great at Ship Rock, although by mid afternoon it was pretty sunny and warm. Still, the humidity was much lower than in recent months and the holds were plenty sticky on steep routes like Welcome to Watauga, Revival and the rather humbling Castaway.

Come on in the shop if your fleece selection is looking ragged. We have some Montbell Fleece that won't give you sticker shock and will keep you toasty in the high country.

We spent a glorious Labor Day Weekend at the New River Gorge, trying to jumpstart our climbing fitness after a summer of less than usual climbing. The temps were pretty unbelievable and the clouds cooperated. It was even cool enough to send a friend running to Wally World for an extra sleeping bag. Hmm mm- heard of Montbell??

As we do most summers, we have been determined to keep climbing despite the unusually hot days of July and August. However, several times in the last few weeks, despite our determination, we have been largely thwarted by summer weather. Several times we arrived at the North End of Looking Glass, only to get rained on- sometimes barely enough to dampen everything, and sometimes a true summer downpour. Other days, the clouds stayed away, but the humidity made every hold seem like a slippery, gooey mess. Recently, I spent more time photographing mushrooms and moss than actually climbing.

Sometimes when we default to Plan B, I remember how much of climbing is the journey, not just the destination. I think it has been good for my mind and body to take a bit of time off from climbing as heavily as possible for a weekend warrior. Still, this week, there seems to be a hint of fall in the air. The mornings are feeling refreshing and we are starting to plan fall climbing trips. Can't wait!

Chaco Sandal Review

In 2004, I was preparing to hike the Camino de Santiago, a 500 mile pilgrimage to the Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela, starting on the French side of the Pyrenees in St Jean Pied de Port. I needed a slew of gear, which included a new pair of Gore Tex hiking boots. Something told me that I would sometimes need reprieve from my boots, so I went looking for a sandal that could be worn with a dress, worn in the shower, and yet still handle some hiking if my feet were dying to ditch the boots.

I found a sandal that does all of this in the Chaco Z/2. Unlike my boots, these sandals have never let me down in the category of comfort and durability. My boots were great, but they took some time to break in, which unfortunately became evident on day one on the Camino- crossing the Pyrenees into the fabled town of Roncesvalles.

My Chacos helped me salvage a touch of femininity after a long day on the trail when I would trade my geeky convertible pants for a simple dress and head to the bar for beer and olives. But, more importantly, they separated me from touching the shower when staying in hostels and dried quickly enough for early morning departures. I will also admit that I wore them with socks when shivering (in June) in the gorgeous mountain town of Cebreiro.

It was rare that I actually hiked in my Chacos on the Camino, but these days you might find me wearing the same pair of sandals headed climbing when the approach trail is short and sweet. I wore them the other day while tubing the Green River and often wear them around the house when my arches need some extra support. The attached picture is a crew of friends headed paddling on the Teton River, with several pairs of Chacos on board.

Six years later, my Z/2s are still going, in fact I just washed them in the washing machine for the first time today, and they look great all over again. The tread is still in great shape. Meanwhile, my hiking boots are nearing retirement even though I use them far less than my Chacos.

If you ever thought $95 was too much to spend on summer sandals, Chacos will change your mind because they do not disappoint.

Organic Farming on See Off Mountain

Although there is a perfectly fabulous vegetable stand called Whistle Stop about a mile and a half from our house, I decided I wanted to put a sunny corner of our yard to good use and try a vegetable garden. Early in spring I planted seeds indoors, and watched for what seemed like ages as they grew to be 2 or 3 inches tall. Some took off fast and quickly fizzled out. Others, like the miscellaneous peppers, were slow and steady.

By late April and May, the survivors were in the ground and clinging on to the soil despite the heavy rains that sometimes move through the area. I frequently use water from the stream bordering our property to water the plants to minimize using the hose, and summer's afternoon rain showers are helping me out as well.

I am happy to say, that the garden is in full force right now. Currently, we have an abundance of fresh arugula, which is fabulous. The tomatoes look like they are trying to take over the universe, and are just starting to flower.

We have one cucumber/ squash like plant that was growing so determinedly from our compost, I decided to give it a try. This mystery plant is now growing like mad and flowering as well. It looks like in a few weeks, we will be having daily gazpacho parties. Yum!

New River Gorge, Bolting and Bushwacking

After a family trip to the beach fell through, Phil and I found ourselves with a long weekend on our hands and nothing planned. Despite a forecast full of 90 degree days, we packed up the trusty Subaru, 2 dogs, plenty of gear and a cooler full of goodies and headed to the New River Gorge, with our fingers crossed that the rain-free forecast would be accurate, and hoping the temps would magically be lower than expected.

After arriving late into the Wild & Wonderful state of WV (formerly OPEN FOR BUSINESS,) we woke up and headed upstream on the south side of the Meadow River. Our friend Jay was determined to "re"discover some forgotten trad routes. Alas, the Meadow did not disappoint. We "found" some stellar routes that simply needed some anchors to make them more accessible. I say simply lightly, because it is actually fairly involved to add anchors to a route like this, since it involves bushwacking with a drill in tow both on the ground and on the rock. As we headed back to Jay's, we realized that our little spot was at least 10 degrees cooler than less shaded areas of the gorge and slapped ourselves on the backs, even though we logged a pretty low number of routes for the day.

Thanks to long summer days, we rallied our motivation and realized we had time to head to the Bridge, where Jay was on a mission to replace the anchors on Two Edge Sword, then finish off the day on Butter Beans. This day was a good lesson in being very thankful for folks like NRAC who take the time, money and energy to make climbing accessible and safe by replacing bolts and anchors when needed. Next time you hike in on a nicely cleared trail, climb a moss and lichen-free route, and clean a nice shiny anchor at the top of a route, remind yourself to volunteer or donate some dough to one of these worth efforts. I am certain it can be a pretty thank-less job.

Day 2 was spent just like a million other climbers headed to NRG- hoofing up the classic Butcher's Branch sport climbs of Kaymoor. After a spring full of trad climbing in North Carolina, it feels indulgent to simply clip bolts while climbing on actual holds! Who doesn't love a day that includes Mo Better Holds, Hard Core Female Thrash and Lost Souls? The day was certainly hot and humid, but perhaps not 90, and an unexpected thunderstorm cooled things off before we could scarf down pizzas at Pies & Pints.

Day 3 was a mixture of somewhat damp starts, trad & sport, humidity, random locals on four wheelers and long, pumpy routes at the lower Meadow. Morale was good even though friction was a little less than ideal. Still, this area is a blast and Toxic Hueco always beckons.

Add a second trip to Pies & Pints, and the weekend was a rap.

Mammut Needle DLX Approach Shoe

I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Mammut's new approach shoe line. Not only do they make some of the finest and most coveted soft goods and ropes in the business they have hopped into the ever flooding shoe market. Bring your "A-Game" Mammut, your gonna need it. With 5.10, Evolv and La Sportiva front running the technical approach shoe race, competitors will need to innovate to challenge the field. Has the Needle DLX made the grade? Lets find out.
The Mammut Needle DLX comes in both Men's and Women's styles and is dubbed by Mammut as "Casual/Urban Approach". As we know from Mammut, casual is not in their job description. I expected to find the famous Mammut technical performance.

Staying as short winded as possible here is my gauntlet for approach shoes.
Sticky Rubber or De-lamination Damnation?
Construction or Destruction?
Support or come up short?

Probably the most important factor in a technical shoe is how well it will grip a variety of surfaces. Most approach shoes focus on tacky grip on exposed rock-- super important for guides, scrambles or alpine climbs. Where approach shoes often suffer is getting to and from the rock. Lack of a lug or relief sole creates a slip and slide hazard on wet ground, dead leaves, mud, descending trails, you get the idea. What the Mammutec sole lacks in stick it make up in aggressive grip. Its not the stickiest rubber in the world but the tread pattern is AMAZING. It is incredibly secure in all conditions and the sticky rubber rand is low profile, allowing foot jamming in steep scrambles. Having said that, I don't think I would lead climb in this shoe but that's what rock shoes are made to do.

The leather upper comes all the way down to the rubber sole which would lead me to believe that delamination could be right round the corner but as of yet I have had no such issues.

Construction or Destruction:
At a glance this performer looks solid, which is what I have come to expect from Mammut. The full leather upper is supple and feels great on the foot. Double stitching around the eyelets will support the constant tightening of the shoe, resisting an eyelet blow out. This is key as the eyelet is simply a hole punched thought the leather. The cuff of the shoe is two piece nylon covering a thickly padded insert around the ankle. The ankle cuff is low volume, so if you have weak ankles this might not be the shoe for you. However the support is generated from a leather "X" design with an active webbing piece that is similar to the Scarpa Techno heel lacing system. This allows you to snug the back of shoe up for more technical, active movement- a nice addition to the to-the-toe lacing system. Brand recognition logos are placed on the toe rand, heel, tongue, and a very nice subtle Mammoth ingrained in the outside upper. Look close in the photos and you will see it.

Support or come up short?

Primarily a crusty trad climber, I usually carry too much stuff in my pack, around 20-30 lbs. Combine that with two knee surgeries and the shoe choice becomes pretty important. The cushion is perfectly adequate in the Needle DLX. The heel support feels a bit tall and as I mentioned above, the heel cuff is low volume so the ankle support piece is something to think about.
Providing awesome support is no issue with a large pack on your back. The Needle DLX is quite predictable and sure footed underneath the load. Moderate stiffness is how I would describe the edging performance and the rocker is casual as well.

Climbing Safety - 10 Lessons Learned

I was unfortunate to witness a ground fall at the Red River Gorge a few weekends ago. Thankfully, the climber was unscathed after a scary loss of consciousness and evacuation to Lexington. The up side of witnessing an event like this is the blatant reminder to pay attention to safety at all times. I think all who were at the crag that day left with some important lessons learned. Here are a few of mine:

1. Anything can happen on any grade of climb. Remember this before you leave the ground, as you make your clips, and as you grab for slack. Remember this every time you climb.

2. The belayer's job is to keep you off the ground and keep you from harm if at all possible. As a belayer, analyze potential hazards- awkward clipping stances, poorly placed bolts, ledges and potential ground falls and make a mental plan for avoiding the hazards. Do this BEFORE the climber leaves the ground and CONSTANTLY as the climber progresses up the route. Communicate with your climber about these hazards- even if the grade is far beneath their ability.

3. You the climber must constantly make judgment calls and communicate them with your belayer. The climber too must analyze potential hazards and point them out to the belayer. Both of you must be on your toes to ensure your safety. Is your belayer distracted? Don't be afraid to get their attention. Don't keep climbing if you suspect the belayer is not paying attention. Say "watch me" when you feel unsure or unstable to alert your belayer.

4. The first 3 bolts often have ground fall potential. You may not have hit the crux yet, so this may not be on your mind, but you can easily slip, misjudge, sneeze, get stung by a bee, etc. Belayer and climber must be on high alert through this section of every climb regardless of the grade. Of course, both should be on high alert for the entire climb, but always be aware of the fact that slack in the system and the dynamic nature of a climbing rope can equate to hitting the ground in many scenarios.

5. Keep yourself on belay the entire time you clean a route. I see so many climbers NOT doing this, and it leaves little margin for error. Learn how to clean a route properly and safely, which means you should be on belay the entire time.

6. Even if you rarely lead routes, you need to know basic safety for climbing outdoors. It may look and feel like the gym, but climbing outdoors brings into play countless additional factors. Knowledge is power for keeping you and your friends safe. Be proactive about learning to climb safely.

7. Back up your belay device if you need to go hands free. I see people going hands free with grigris often or letting go of the belay while a climber is clipped in direct. Your brake hand is always on duty.

8. Tie a knot in the end of your rope. If you do this, you will never lower a climber off the end of a rope or rappel off your own rope. Both incidents happen frequently for no good reason.

9. Understand the limitations of a Daisy Chain. This is a useful piece of equipment when used properly. Make sure you are aware of how NOT to use a Daisy Chain.

10. Be careful who you let belay you. Even a good friend can give you a faulty belay. Be careful before accepting a belay from a stranger- your life depends on it. Period.

Many of these lessons are paramount to multi pitch trad climbing, and are often skipped or ignored when sport climbing. I see more than ever why to use these practices when climbing trad or sport, climbing or belaying- ALL the time.

Ship Rock in Summer

Saturday we headed to another great summer climbing destination : Ship Rock. When much of the southeast is getting steamy and the friction is disappearing, Ship Rock, nestled right next to the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is usually breezy and balmy. It looks like a relatively small cliff line from the road, but the two climbing areas contain excellent trad routes.

This past Saturday was no exception. Despite passing clouds and dashes of light rain, the classic climbs of Ship Rock remained dry and pumpy as ever. We started off with Hindu Kush on the main tier, then moved up the hill for Welcome to Watauga. Mike Grimm of NC's own Misty Mountain and Phil traded stories about past climbing partners leaving gear behind on this outstanding route.

The mashed, fixed tri-cam reminded us that we need to replace some of the tri-cam s on our rack, since they have succumbed to other routes this year. They seem to be one of those pieces of climbing gear that seems to collect dust for a little while, and you wonder why you keep carrying it, but then you hit a rash of situations were they are indispensable.

By the end of the day, we finished on everyone's favorite 5.10a - Harpoon plus a run up The Anguish of Captain Bligh. If you haven't headed to Ship Rock to check out these amazing climbs, we'd highly recommend it. Stop in and say hi to Mike at the Misty factory while you are at it and enjoy!

It would be an understatement to say the dogs were whooped on the way home!

Ed Maggart's Sabbatical

We've gotten a little backlogged on blog posts lately, but we wanted to make sure and mention how great Ed Maggart's slideshow was a few weeks back. We had a fun crew of people who gobbled down the fresh cookies and cold beverages, and gathered to listen to Ed's travels across Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal & Tibet during his fall sabbatical. The pictures and stories were fascinating, and it sounds like Ed encountered amazing people. We were particularly intrigued by the crew Ed met who hunt wolves with eagles!

Ed's summit attempt of Ama Dablam was a great reminder that your climbing safety is more important than any peak, send or summit. When the odds stack against you, it is time to re-evaluate your goals and save it for another day. Kuddos to Ed for being able to make that decision and for realizing that a trip like his is worth so much more than simply achieving a certain elevation.

Hawks Bill Classic Climbs

Phil & I took a friend to Hawks Bill for his first time on Saturday, and were lucky to have the crag to ourselves. Although the trail into the main wall was wet in spots, most of the climbs were dry. We had to wait out a 10 minute ominous cloud that only spitted on us after looking much more serious, then headed up Winged Mongrel. This stellar climb has some steep moves for 5.10a trad, but includes great jugs!

We did a quick run up the direct start to Eros , then headed to the lower wall so Joe could give a shot on the Fat Lady. This 1 or 2 pitch classic is a fantastic 5.11a line with great views of Linville Gorge once you finish the pumpy ending. You can surprisingly do this entire route with one 60 meter rope, but tie a safety knot at the end of your rope to be sure.

Lastly, we hopped on King of Kings as the sun began to recede and more rain clouds loomed overhead. Another great, pumpy climb that includes three bolts and a few small cams at the top for 5.11d rating. We couldn't believe we had the crag to ourselves, but the rain held off and made for quite good climbing temps and comfy car camping. Who doesn't love climbing at Linville Gorge in the summer??

Dupont Mountain Biking

The Wednesday night ladies group had a blast in Dupont State Forest last week! After meeting at Sycamore Cycles, we headed to the Reasonover Parking area.

This waterfall never fails to calm your soul! It is gushing with water right now and remains gorgeous as ever.

The view from the airstrip had the added bonus of wild turkeys and wildflowers. This is a great vantage point to see multiple ridgelines and the "smoky" quality of Pisgah National Forest.

New River Rendezvous #8

It had been too long since we headed to The New, so it felt great to hit the road and spend three days in Fayetteville for this year's Rendezvous. Ocho Loco was a ton of fun, and we kicked it off Thursday night with the Mountain Khakis Pants Pageant. Emcee Jay Young always does a good job of keeping the crowd entertained while a bold few lose their pants.

The weather vacillated quite a bit throughout the weekend- from sunny and gorgeous to downpours and thunderstorms. Still, there was plenty of climbing and fun to be had with a little motivation. Phil did a great job on Handsome & Well Hung at the Bridge Buttress despite muggy conditions and Jessica finally hopped on the phenomenal Super Crack. We even made our annual foray into some out-of-the-guidebook crags. We had a great time seeing so many North Carolinians represent!

Our new dog Vinca passed her first craggin weekend with flying colors and had a Weim play date with the Smith's Weims Elvis & Daisy. She's the cutie in the middle! Our Daisy is supervising out of view!

Sam's Knob

The weather this past weekend was spectacular for just about any activity imaginable. Phil has spent the last three days freshening up on his AMGA skills and taking the SPI Course with Appalachian Mountain Institute. I hear it is a very experienced group of climbers and guides and that Patrick Weaver is doing a great job at balancing the crew and refreshing their skills.

Meanwhile, I headed into Pisgah on Saturday with Daisy and our new dog, Vinca. As you make your way up to the Blue Ridge Parkway on 276, you can still see a lot of the tree damage that occurred thanks to this past winter's storms. Still, everything is blossoming and budding like crazy in the forest. The mountain laurel is starting to bud, and the rhodos and irises in Pisgah Forest proper are spectacular right now.

We parked at Black Balsam and headed up to Sam's Knob, which is a phenomenal spot to take in the views and eat a trail lunch. It was surprisingly breezy in the parking lot, though it was truly perfect hiking weather. The two girls and I then headed to Flat Laurel Creek and over to Little Sam's Knob for a total of roughly 8 miles, which was more than enough to tucker us out for the drive home.

Occasionally my motivation falters before I head to this popular area of the parkway, but once I get there, I am always 100% rewarded for making the drive and battling the crowds. Even though the parking areas were busy, the trails provided plenty of peace and quiet.

Cayman Brac Climbing

As our third anniversary approaches tomorrow, I find myself daydreaming about heading to the Caribbean to climb. You may be surprised to find out that there is indeed climbing in the Caribbean. Phil and I honeymooned at Cayman Brac, seeking to have both a beachy and a climbing-filled trip.

The flight to Grand Cayman from Charlotte is quick and easy, and allows some cool views of Cuba. If I were a jet setter, I would do it more often! Then, you grab a puddle jumper to head to The Brac. This small plane flies a triangular route from Grand Cayman, roughly 88 miles to Cayman Brac, on Little Cayman and back to Grand, giving you a chance to peak at the two lesser known islands.

We landed on Cayman Brac and grabbed a trusty rental car. The island is only 12 miles long, but the car gave us a lot of flexibility to climb and explore.

Your first impression upon arrival is that Cayman Brac is tiny. With less than 2000 inhabitants, this is not the place to go if you are looking for nightlife. This IS the place to go for world class scuba diving and a quirky, off the beaten path beach hideaway. If you are a do-it-yourself'er looking to climb or dive and not see many people, the Brac is for you.

For Sale signs dot nearly every lot and beach villa, which makes you feel like everything is for sale. Still, the housekeeper of our beach house arrived right when we did, and left us with delicious crab soup and conch fritters to welcome us. If you rent a house, it would be worth it to stash some food staples in your luggage. Everything is imported on Cayman Brac, which means it is pricey and not necessarily fresh. Luckily, right down the road we found a fabulous restaurant and bar, which is know for its jerk chicken.

We vacationed at Cayman Brac the first week of May, which is really just after the best climbing weather. It was quite hot in the afternoons, which meant we planned our climbing day according to the sun, or called it a day by lunchtime and went snorkeling. We never saw another climber, and enjoyed having each crag to ourselves.

All of the climbing areas are pretty easy to get to, although some climbs must be rapped into from the cliff top. The titanium Tortuga bolts are a blessing and certainly weather the salt air well. There are very few beginner routes. Most of the routes are 5.10-5.12.

We climbed at:

The Northeast Point
This area on the tip of the island is super fun, and accessed from the top. Watch out for the sharp rocks at the top! They feel like broken glass and will swiftly cut packs, clothing and ropes. A cloth or mat to protect your rope is an excellent idea. We would rap in with a lead rope backpacker coiled. This enabled us to lead routes, but the rap line ensured we could retreat if needed. Think twice about your safety here, as you won't find any climbing friendly SARs! Also, be respectful of rare Boobie birds. The Devil Wears Flippers is outstanding.

Love Shack
This easily accessed spot is great for a quick burn. The short routes are steep and pumpy. A roaming cow watched us flail since there is really no easy warm up.

The Wave Wall
This fun crag keeps you on your toes. The crashing waves below can be intimidating and can actually prevent you from climbing here when the sea is turbulent.

The Orange Cave
Near the Wave Wall, this was the first area we checked out. There is actually a 5.8 to get you acquainted with Cayman Brac climbing!

Dixon's Wall
Ask permission before heading into backyards to access this climbing area full of bizarre toofa stalactites. Super fun and walking distance from our cottage!

Check out Rock & Ice October 95 and December 97 Issues for more info on climbing at Cayman Brac. Don't count on encountering locals or other climbers to show you the way! We never saw another climber or found a local who knew much if anything about climbing.
